A collaboration with Alejandro Muñoz

A crowd of shapes holds up a single plane.
Everything the mind can draw, carrying one clear circle.

Under the still black circle of the top, a crowd is gathered. Spheres, cones, cylinders, an arch, a slab, an egg — the whole vocabulary of primary form, standing shoulder to shoulder on an iron ring. The tabletop is silence; the base is everything the mind can think of, holding it up.

The forms are carved in wood and then given to fire — wood submitted to flame until the grain darkens and hardens, sealed by burning. Fire turns each shape to black and raises its texture, so it reads as shadow with a memory of the tree still in it. Above them, a single disc of San Gabriel marble, its pale veins drifting across the dark stone like slow weather.

Designed by Lascaux, made by the hand of Alejandro Muñoz. The drawing is Lascaux's; the carving, the fire and the finish are his. Wood burned to permanence, stone cut to a plane, iron holding both — the meeting of opposites, gathered under one circle.

A functional artwork. It begins as a table that receives, and grows into one that seats: the same base, in San Gabriel marble, carries a top sized for four or six. Limited to three.
